In June 2026, the Next Generation Mobile Networks Alliance (NGMN) published two new reports presenting an operator view on two closely related aspects of 6G: how networks should migrate from 5G to 6G, and when 6G should actually be introduced.
The first report, 6G Architecture and Migration Options – An Operator View, looks at possible migration approaches across the RAN and Core Network. A key message is that the industry should avoid repeating the experience of 5G, where multiple architecture and migration options added complexity for operators, vendors and devices. NGMN therefore recommends converging early on a primary migration approach and limiting alternatives to cases where there is a clearly identified need.
Multi-RAT Spectrum Sharing (MRSS) is identified as the baseline migration mechanism, with Dual Connectivity and Dual Stack considered possible alternatives where MRSS cannot meet specific deployment requirements. I have discussed MRSS and Dual Stack for initial 6G deployments in an earlier post, so will not repeat the technical details here. What is interesting in the new NGMN publication is the clear operator preference for making MRSS the starting point, while recognising that it still needs improvements over the 4G/5G Dynamic Spectrum Sharing experience, including better efficiency and support across FDD and TDD spectrum.
The second report, 6G Deployment Timeframe Considerations – An Operator View, looks at the question from a different direction. Rather than simply asking when the standards will be ready, NGMN considers the practical constraints affecting when operators can introduce 6G. These include the maturity and quality of specifications, availability of network equipment and devices, regional differences and the readiness of the wider ecosystem. NGMN notes that current industry expectations point towards the commercial introduction of standardised 6G capabilities in the early years of the 2030s, although timing will vary between countries and operators.
Importantly, the message is not to rush the standards simply to meet a particular date. NGMN argues that sufficient time should be allowed to develop robust initial specifications, drawing lessons from the deployment of 5G Standalone. Large-scale 6G deployment will ultimately depend not just on a completed specification but on a sufficiently mature ecosystem of infrastructure and compatible devices.
Taken together, the two publications make a fairly consistent argument. A simpler migration path and a realistic deployment timeframe are closely connected. Selecting too many migration options could increase implementation complexity and slow down deployment, while rushing the standards could create problems that operators then have to deal with for many years.
Much of the underlying message from NGMN is therefore familiar: 6G should build on existing network investments, minimise unnecessary complexity and deliver tangible benefits rather than becoming another technology refresh for its own sake. What these two new publications add is a more concrete operator view of how that principle should influence both the migration choices being made now and the timing of eventual 6G deployments.
