China’s first so-called “Pre-6G” network has generated significant attention across the telecom industry, with many headlines suggesting that 6G has already arrived. In reality, this is not a commercial 6G network, but rather an advanced experimental platform that combines early 6G concepts with existing 5G infrastructure.
The initiative, launched in Nanjing, is important because it moves beyond isolated technology demonstrations towards system-level validation in real-world environments. It also highlights several key themes expected to define future 6G systems, including AI-native networking, ultra-low latency, integrated sensing, and support for emerging applications such as robotics, drones, and immersive communications.
