Bharat 6G 2025 Marks India's Ambitious Bid for 6G Leadership

The recently concluded Bharat 6G 2025 conference in New Delhi brought together government officials, industry leaders and researchers to present India’s roadmap for next generation telecom. With much fanfare and optimism, the event highlighted India’s aspirations to become a global leader in 6G technologies by 2030.

The conference took place against the backdrop of impressive progress in 5G rollout across the country, with over 470k 5G base stations by Feb 2025. At the centre of this ambition is the Bharat 6G Vision, a document that outlines a path for India to influence the design and development of 6G technology by 2030. It talks about supporting advanced research, encouraging collaboration across sectors and contributing meaningfully to international standards. The Bharat 6G Alliance has been formed to bring together stakeholders from academia, government and industry, all working towards the shared goal of giving India a voice in shaping the future of connectivity.

The event brought together policymakers, operators, vendors and researchers. There was no shortage of confidence as they spoke about India’s growing activity in the global 6G landscape. Many pointed to the increasing number of patents filed from Indian institutions and the government’s support for more than one hundred research initiatives. There is a strong desire to ensure that India does not miss the early stages of 6G development in the same way it did with previous generations.

Discussions at the conference explored some of the big themes around 6G, including the use of artificial intelligence, the integration of terrestrial and non terrestrial networks, and advances in sub millisecond latency and automation. The promise of connectivity that reaches from deep ocean to low Earth orbit featured heavily. India’s strong positioning in digital public infrastructure and software platforms was presented as a foundation for future leadership in 6G systems that go beyond communications.

Public sector players such as BSNL and CDOT described their contributions to 6G research. Private sector leaders including Reliance Jio outlined their work with national and international partners. Vendors such as Nokia highlighted the work already being done in research centres across India. There were also discussions about sustainability, affordability and how India’s 6G efforts could serve global South priorities rather than just replicating the needs of highly developed markets.

While the tone of the event was confident, the challenges ahead are significant. Every country with a telecoms industry is announcing its own 6G strategy and forming alliances. There is no shortage of promotional material or high level roadmaps, and all of them carry the same message of intent to lead. Turning that intent into genuine global influence will require deep technical contributions, sustained investment and active involvement in standardisation over the next five to ten years.

India has made a strong start by entering the 6G conversation early and backing its vision with institutional support and research funding. But declarations and targets alone will not be enough. The real measure of leadership will be in how consistently India participates in shaping the technologies, protocols and platforms that 6G will be built upon.

Some of the presentations are available on the conference page here. The conference was also broadcast live. The list below will help you navigate to the relevant section on the video which is 9 hours 20 minutes long:

The Bharat 6G 2025 event showed that India is now aware of what it takes to play on the global telecom stage from the beginning rather than joining late. Whether that awareness becomes action remains to be seen. For now, India has taken its place in the global 6G leadership queue, and it has done so with confidence.
